ACT! SPEAK! BUILD! Week

The Habitat for Humanity organization as a whole is having a global week of advocacy called “Act! Speak! Build! Week,” where students come together to educate themselves and their community about the ongoing challenges of poverty housing. This year, UCLA Habitat is hosting campus events (during week 3 of spring quarter) to promote awareness of and social action against substandard housing. Come out to support Habitat for Humanity.
SPEAKER (Tuesday, April 14th)------
“Come check out the story of a family who got a second chance”
Come to De Neve to learn more about Habitat for Humanity! Joyce Grair, a Habitat for Humanity representative, and Kathleen Curry, one of the recipients of a house through Habitat, will be speaking about the organization and their experiences with it. Come hear their stories of hope and second chances.
Time: 7:00pm-8:00pm
Location: De Neve Plaza Room A
(FREE Refreshments will be served.)
SHANTYTOWN (Thursday, April 16th)------
“The problem of homelessness is in our very own bruin plaza”
Come join UCLA Habitat for Humanity in Shantytown, an event aimed at educating the public about how many homeless people survive, and why the Habitat for Humanity cause is so important.
The idea of Shantytown is to have UCLA student groups get together in teams and, using items they have found outside on the streets, build the best shelter possible. Come out to learn more about what you can do to help combat poverty and substandard housing.

Fall Quarter Events Update!!!
Hey everyone! Hope everyone survived or will ace upcoming midterms!
We, the leadership board and the committee members (THANKS GROUP YOU ARE AWWWEESOOMME~~) have been working hard to present the Fall Quarter Events:
1. RUBIO's Fundraiser -- Save The Date!! 11/19/08 Wednesday, 2-8pm
We all know you guys love Fish Tacos on Tuesdays! But what's better?? Fish Tacos on Tuesdays AND Wednesday! Of course 11/19/08 is still far away, but it's always good to spread the word out early! So tell all of your friends to save this date for some good food for a GREAT cause!
2. BJ's Fundraiser & Movie Social
Although we do not have set date, we are informing everyone ahead in time. Once we get more details, we will send them to you!
3. Gingerbread House Building
So you built real houses... can you use your skills to create a gingberbread house? Come challenge groups just like yours to the ultimate Habitat gingerbread house building contest!
Although we do not have set date, we are informing everyone ahead in time. Once we get more details, we will send them to you!
Of course, build days will continue throughout the quarter, which brings up the next issue. We acknowledge that having hard-soled shoes is hindering members from attending build days. The leadership board and the committee are working hard to provide a solution so that hard-soled shoes are not the determining factor of attending a build day.
COMMITTEE: If you want to be become part of the committee, please reply with your interest so that we can provide more information about the meetings.
That's all! If you have any question or concerns feel free to ask!
Committee meeting this Tuesday!
Hey potential Committee members!
We will be having a committee meeting Oct. 14 ; 7-8pm @ Boelter Hall 4413.
At the meeting, we will be explaining in more detail the committee, and afterwards the committee will convene to talk about pertinent issues like going over some fundraising activities, organizing more socials and discussing different and new volunteer opportunities outside of building. If you can bring ideas to these respective areas to the meeting, that would be great!
But it won't be all business! We will also be playing games to get to know each other!!
If you have not signed up for becoming part of the Committee, please email uclahabitat@gmail.com. Otherwise, we'll see you there!!
BBQ at the Park!
Foremost, we would like to thank everyone that came out to the first general meeting. The leadership board was astonished by the numbers!!!
However, if you missed the first general meeting, there is nothing to worry about. There is no official application or membership process for our club. We believe as a campus chapter affiliated with Habitat for Humanity that there should be no restriction to those who wish to dedicate their time and their effort towards helping others.
With that said, our next event is the BBQ at the Park! There will be not only free food but also social activities for you to bond with other Habitat members. So come out and relax with us!
When: Friday, October 10th at 4pm
Where: Sunset Canyon Recreation Center
First General Meeting
Come join us at our First General Meeting to learn about what Habitat for Humanity is about and what we do as a campus chapter! You will learn about our build days, collegiate challenge, global village, Habitat socials and much more.
We will be having two First General Meetings so if you cannot make the first one, you can come for the second one. We will be discussing the same topics at both meetings so you only have to attend one.
And if this isn’t enough of an incentive, we will be serving ice cream and cookies!
Tuesday: 9/30 at 7pm in Hedrick Summit Recreation
Wednesday: 10/1 at 7pm in Hedrick Summit Recreation
We’ll see you there!
